What You Need To Know When Setting Goals

It’s a new year, but it doesn’t always mean it’s a ‘new’ start.

Why? Because you may have some short and long term goals that you have been working on from the last few years, and are progressing into 2019 and possibly, beyond.

Most of us have heard of the joke, where the gym empties out as the year draws to a close and is miraculously jam-packed in January. And we all know there’s always an element of truth to every joke right? The truth is, people have tendencies to give up too easily. It’s either that or the goals they set aren’t achievable within their means or they haven’t created a framework to work with in order to learn the discipline involved to fulfil their goals. The gym is just a basic example I’ve used, but this can be applied to anything in life, whether that be your studies, career, personal projects and so on.

I’ve generally been a driven individual and I’ve always had goals, but I haven’t always actioned them. On the occasion, when I did, I would partially action them and let the remaining steps required to achieve the goals slide away into the abyss.

“It’s good to set goals. That’s a start. But it’s better to action them till they are achieved.”
— Quoc Phan

Not only will that be hugely satisfying, but it proves to yourself that you can do it, and it will motivate you to set new goals that are aimed for bigger things. If your goals change, ensure you amend the process, and follow through with the actionable steps to achieve the revised set of goals.

I know this last statement may be a little ironic considering this blog post is being posted at the beginning of the new year, but, don’t let time dictate when you should set goals. If you want to start something in mid year or even December 2019, do it. Don’t wait for January 2020. One month is ample time to generate good progress.

To summarise, the moral is, don’t be that person to talk and not walk. It showcases that you may have great dreams, but a poor sense of making those dreams a reality.
