My Thoughts on Valentine's Day

Christmas and New Years have gone and for us Aussies, Australia Day has just passed, but the holidays don’t stop here. Nestled between that and Easter is Valentine’s Day. It’s either an irrelevant and/or depressing affair for singles, or a romantic day for the couples. A day which majority would say is the one day in the year to proclaim their love to their significant other. It’s a cash cow for chocolatiers, florists, bottlers, gifting services, and restaurants.

In my opinion, Valentine’s Day shouldn’t just be about flamboyant gift giving or a competition between other couples on who will receive the biggest and best bouquet. Obviously, this all depends on the couple too, if that’s what is wanted, then that’s completely fine. However, I believe the core element of Valentine’s Day should be actioned everyday. Whether it’s loving yourself, family, friends or partner. Who is to say you need a significant other to be able to celebrate this love filled day?

When it comes to Valentine’s Day in a relationship, a yearly grand gesture is great, but, for me, your love towards your partner should be performed and displayed in numerous little ways on a consistent basis. In terms of ‘ways’, you can use the five love languages as a reference if you need a foundation to begin with.

But if you’re the one who likes to bring out the bands, make sure you spend within your means and don’t let your significant other swing the shovel on you either. There are many other moments in the year where you can showcase your love and generosity too. Think of your yearly anniversary, a job promotion, birthday and Christmas to name a few.

Additionally, from personal experience and observations, it seems like Valentine’s Day is a spoil me day for the feminine side of the relationship. I’m not saying to buy me roses, but I believe both sides should celebrate being together, even if it’s just going out for a pleasant wine and dine.

Now onto the singles. Just because it’s a Valentine’s Day post, doesn’t mean you have been forgotten. And with what I’m about to say, it’s directed to the ones who get dismissive and depressed, where they almost have a negative attitude on life when Valentine’s Day rolls around or when they see couples celebrating.

Your time will come. Just do you. Like I’ve said numerous times previously, focusing on yourself is the best form of investment, because you’re guaranteed a return.

You have one less responsibility on your plate, a healthier wallet, and more time to do whatever you want. If you want to lay down and watch Netflix with an ice cream scoop in your mouth - you can. You don’t have to worry about going to your partner’s brother’s work promotion party with people you don’t know, when you just want to do nothing.

You escape the pressures to buy a highly inflated bouquet of flowers that are perishable, and instead, you can buy those fresh kicks you wanted.

Some may say it’s easy for me to say this because I’m in a relationship, but I haven’t always been. Word of advice, embrace the single life and spend time with family and friends. Cliché, but learn to love yourself before trying to love someone else.

The one lesson I’ve learnt is do not neglect your family and friends because as negative as it may sound, if a relationship ever goes sour, they are the ones who have your back. That one magical Valentine’s Day in 2019 could be just a memory you wish to wipe away.

Love it or hate it, you can’t escape the public displays of endless heart emojis and roses so just embrace it. And if you dislike it that much lock yourself in your room or throw a “I hate Valentine’s Day party” I’m sure there will be others willing to join you!
