Streetwear Trends for 2019

Streetwear has undeniably become a staple in every person’s wardrobe in modern society and it’s not hard to see why. It’s comfy, functional, and proves that you can look incredibly stylish without whipping on a classic suit or a maxi dress.

Oversized Tops

Ladies, if you’re feeling a little lazy and looking for an easy, but comfortable option, an oversized t-shirt or hoodie is the way to go. You can also wear it as a dress and pair it off with some sneakers and you’ve got yourself a stylish outfit with minimal effort. If you’re a little on the taller side, opt for elongated/longline styles, so you avoid having any wardrobe malfunctions with your backside haha.

For the dudes, you can rock the oversized look too, but you must take that extra step to wear pants or shorts. We don’t have that luxury like the women do (not like that would be pretty sight anyway).

Flare Leg Pants

Streetwear is all about the chill, relaxed, comfort vibes so for women, culottes have continued to be a staple in the wardrobe along with the beloved boyfriend jeans. In 2019 the flare leg pants are making a comeback so if you’re daring give them a spin. It just goes to show that not only are the 90’s back, but the 70s are too.

Relaxed Pants

Suiting separates aren’t just for business or formal occasions. It’s been incorporated into the world of streetwear with an urban-influenced touch. Brands have been releasing pants with patterns you’re used to seeing on a suit pant but with an elastic waistband to give you the preppy look with a casual feel.  The added benefit to this is it’s comfortable for the food coma days, whilst being simple to put on and take off.

Neon/High-Vis

As fashion trends continue to recycle itself, one that has been welcomed back into the fold is neon. I remember owning so many bright colours in my wardrobe when I was younger. I think I had more shades of pink t-shirts than white at that stage.

This is a bold look due to the brightness of the colours, so if you want to subtly incorporate it into your outfit, invest in neon-coloured accessories such as a belt, cross body bag or scarf. From my observations, the fluro yellow that’s a staple colour with many blue-collar workers is the most popular of this trend. Other than that, hot pink is my personal pick, because it just looks fun and funky. For the record, I used to own a pair of hot pink Nike Air Max 90s and I loved them. They were almost blinding people because they were literally that bright haha.

Utility/Modern Military

For the last decade or so, unless you work in a specific industry where it’s part of your uniform, cargo pants were a wardrobe item that was ridiculed. In 2019, with the relaxed silhouettes trending, the cargo pant has been revived. Additionally, clothing pieces are coming out with more patch pocket designs, whilst pairing it up with small cross body bags to give off that rugged look. I call this trend, ‘functional fashion’, where it’s comfortable, stylish and provides numerous storage options too.

Animal print

I know this isn’t exclusively part of streetwear, but I have to list it as it’s been incorporated into every aspect of fashion, you can’t go shopping these days without seeing something with an animal print design. I did mention in my previous blog post about stylish trends for women in 2018/19 that animal print was going to experience a major revival, and its over delivering on my expectations. I feel like I’m walking through a safari everyday. Out of all the animals in the wild, the leopard is the overwhelming favourite. I’ve even seen some online stores selling leopard print for menswear, however I think I’ll leave this for the women to rock and for me to appreciate. That just proves how big this trend is right now and if you never liked the idea of it at first, I guarantee you that will soon change.

Vintage Sportswear

The two prominent sportswear brands Nike and Adidas have been giving us ‘a blast from the past’ over the past few years, and the streets are loving it. Wardrobe pieces such as the college jackets, tracksuits and windbreakers were 90s staples and they are back with a bang in 2019, and probably beyond.

All Over Logomania

It started with one simple big logo like Tommy Jeans or Levi’s on a t-shirt, but now it has expanded to the idea of the more excessive, the better. Whether the logos are a pattern on a sweater, or you’re simply dressed head to toe in logos, you are seen as trendy amongst the streetwear crowds. However, my personal tip would be, if you’re going to go logo heavy up top, keep it basic down low and vice versa. It’s just a better aesthetic balance.

Chunky Sneakers

The polarising streetwear trend of the dad sneaker was big in 2018, and will continue to surge in 2019. There was a lot of skepticism going around when this trend started, but you can’t doubt that it’s going hard in the streetwear market right now with many high-end fashion houses and fast-fashion brands releasing several renditions of the chunky sneaker style. Personally, it’s not something I would rock, but I can definitely see why it’s popular and how it works with outfits.

As you would’ve noticed throughout this blog post, the comfy and more baggier fits are in, so that relaxed look would be well rounded off with a pair of chunky sneakers.

Fanny Packs/Cross Body Bags

These accessories are no longer reserved for festivals but are now part of everyday fashion fits. I’m personally not a fan, but like the chunky sneaker trend, I can understand its aesthetic appeal in the streetwear world and its functionality.  You have already seen women rocking this look but now the men have jumped on the band wagon since it will allow them to carry the essentials instead of loading up the pockets.
