7 Clothing Hacks

There are always little ways that can be unorthodox at times but will just make life easier. Some may be unknown to you, and others you know of. Here are some quick fashion hacks to help you broaden or freshen up your fashion knowledge.

Wear a hat to obtain natural hair volume

Some of you ask how I get so much volume in my hair, well this is my hack. After a wash and towel dry, set your hair using a hat by simply pushing your hair upwards into the direction you want it to sit and wear the hat for a short while. Make sure the desired positioning of your hair remains in that way while it’s underneath the hat. You’ll notice your hair being shaped into the style with volume. This saves you from using a hair dryer, which isn’t always healthy for your hair anyway.

Graphite restores troublesome zippers

If you’re having issues with the track system on a jacket or bag, try using graphite such as a pencil. Simply run the pencil across both sides of the troublesome zip, and it should slide more smoothly.

Turn garments inside out when washing

There are many reasons as to why garments should be washed inside out. The garment can go through the wear and tear of the wash on the inside so it doesn’t compromise the outside, this is particularly important for graphic printed t-shirts, it can also minimise the exterior colour differentiation on darker coloured garments such as black denim jeans, which ultimately helps prolong their life. It could also be argued that the interior side of your clothes are against your skin that sweats throughout the day, hence, it requires a deeper clean than the exterior.

Use your neck as a waist size indicator

If you’re unable to try on a pair of pants because the change rooms are too busy or you’re simply a little lazy, wrap the waistline of the pants around your neck to gauge how they will fit. If the pants fit the circumference of your neck, chances are, those pants will fit. If the ends of the waistline don't meet at the back of your neck, the pants will be a little snug and if the waistline overlaps, the pants will be a bit baggy.

Use a razor to remove pilling

Pills form when the fibres in a material come loose and form small balls of yarn at the end of the fibre. This occurs through excessive rubbing, which often derives from general wear and washing. To remove this, grab a razor, pull the fabric taut, and carefully shave the pilling away.

Steam your clothes through showering

Is ironing something you struggle with? Or are you running out of time to iron? Hang the garment in the bathroom as you have a hot shower. The steam will reduce the crinkles. You can take another step by blow drying the garment to further reduce the crinkles and dry up any moisture left from the steam.

Break in leather shoes with a hair dryer

When you have a new pair of leather shoes, it’s stiff, hence the leather needs to loosen up and mould to your feet. To hasten the ‘breaking in’ process, blow dry the inside of your shoes, wear thick socks and walk around in these pair of shoes for a little while. The heat will slowly stretch the leather out.
